Sprachliche Äußerungen sind nicht willkürlich und regellos, sondern vielmehr einem strengen Konventionssystem unterworfen, ohne dessen Beherrschung wir in den Äußerungen unserer Umgebung keinen Sinn entdecken könnten. Die Grammatik als Teil der Sprachwissenschaft beschreibt dieses Konventionssystem in Form eines ausformulierten Regelwerks und beschäftigt sich dabei z.B. mit der Lautgestalt sprachlicher Zeichen und den Bauprinzipien von Wörten und Sätzen. Bei der Formulierung oder dem Empfang sprachlicher Äußerungen braucht uns dieses Konventionssystem mit seinen Regeln nicht bewusst zu sein: jedes Kind beherrscht seine Muttersprache, ohne jemals etwas von Akkusativ, Verb oder Infinitiv gehört zu haben.
Auch die Musik erscheint uns in aller Regel nicht als chaotisches, sondern als regelhaft angelegtes System, in dem wir uns aufgrund gelernter Konventionen zurechtfinden: wir empfinden musikalische Spannung und Entspannung oder bilden Erwartungen an den musikalischen Verlauf aus, die erfüllt oder enttäuscht werden können.
Im Mittelpunkt es Seminars stehen daher die folgenden Fragen: Wie ist die häufig formuliete Analogie von Sprache und Musik zu bewerten? Können die Konventionssysteme der Musik analog zu denen der Sprache analysiert werden, wie dies mehrfach versucht worden ist? Wird man mit Begriffen, Kategorien und Methoden der Sprachwissenschaft dem Phänomen "Musik" überhaupt gerecht? Wie sieht dann u.U die Grammatik der Musik aus und wie eigenen wir sie uns an? Kann man daraus Schlussfolgerungen ableiten, welche Musik verstehbar ist und welche nicht?
